I’m so lucky to have the privilege of designing and making pieces that reflect the individual stories and personalities of my clients. One of my most recent projects was Remi’s unusual hand carved wedding ring. His vision was truly out of this world—quite literally!
Remi had quite a clear idea of what he wanted. He envisioned an organic, carved surface with hidden gemstones emerging in regal colours. Together, we chose a vibrant palette of red rubies, green emeralds, rich purple amethyst, and sparkling diamonds. What made this project even more special was that some of the stones came from an old ring shared between Remi and his wife Sophie. The gold itself came from an old 9ct yellow gold chain that they no longer wore, adding not only a personal touch to the piece, but also an element of resourcefulness.
The Making Process: Earthy, Textured, and Irregular
The process of bringing Remi’s vision to life started with sandcasting his old gold chain to form the ring band. This method gave the band a grainy, imperfect surface, resembling natural textures found in the earth—a perfect complement to the idea of stones emerging organically from the ring.
I then carefully hand-carved each section around the band, creating recesses and caverns for the gemstones to sit in. Setting each stone—amethyst, diamond, emeralds, and rubies—was a meticulous process. The trickiest part? Ensuring that the design maintained its irregular, earthy look without falling into symmetry. Achieving a natural, non-uniform design is often more challenging than it appears, but the result was a wedding ring that felt one-of-a-kind and truly bespoke.
Why Consider an Alternative Wedding Ring?
For many, a wedding ring is not just a piece of jewellery; it’s a reflection of personal style, values, and shared stories. Remi’s ring is a perfect example of how an alternative approach to wedding rings can create something extraordinary. By incorporating personal materials and focusing on specific design details, we made a ring that stands out while also holding a unique story of its own to be talked about for generations.
Whether you’re looking for a traditional design or something a little out of the ordinary, a custom-made wedding ring allows you to capture the essence of your relationship in a way that’s entirely your own. I loved making Remi’s ring, and it’s a reminder of the incredible creative possibilities that come with bespoke jewellery.
If you have your own ideas or materials you'd like to incorporate into a piece, I’d love to sit down with you and explore what we can create together.
