An Heirloom Reimagined: Mary’s Remodelled Ruby Necklace

A few years back I had the pleasure of working with Mary, who brought me a collection of meaningful jewellery pieces she’d had passed down to her and a ring she no longer enjoyed wearing. Together, we decided to transform these pieces into something truly personal—a bespoke pendant that represents both her style and sentimental value.

The Process: From Old to New

The centre piece of this transformation was a stunning pear shaped ruby taken from Mary's old ring. The stone was simply beautiful, so we wanted to make it the star of the show. To make the setting for the ruby, we utilised the back of Mary’s father’s signet ring which meant we could preserve the beautiful old original hallmarks inside, a hidden detail that keeps a piece of her family history intact.

The remaining gold from these pieces was melted down into a beautiful, large, crushed raw-edge pendant. This unusual texture gives the pendant a rustic, organic feel. We added a personal twist by hand engraving an "M" on the front in a style that stayed classic and elegant.

The Sentimental Value of Remodelling

Remodelling jewellery isn’t just about creating a new piece; it’s about carrying memories forward. Whether it’s old chains, broken earrings, or unworn rings, every element can be reused in some way to create something new and meaningful to you. This approach allows clients like Mary to hold onto the history of their jewellery, while enjoying a fresh and modern design they’ll love wearing every day.

Why Consider Remodelling?

Remodelling isn’t just meaningful—it’s also practical. Repurposing your existing gold and gemstones can be a more cost-effective way to craft something special without starting from scratch. Gold, in particular, can add up quickly when melted down and reused, making it a sustainable and budget-friendly option for custom jewellery.

If you have old pieces lying around—perhaps tucked away in a drawer or forgotten in a jewellery box—consider giving them a second life. Take a look through your collection, and if you’d like to discuss a bespoke creation of your own, feel free to get in touch.

Mary’s remodelled pendant is a perfect example of how old jewellery can be transformed into something new, meaningful, and entirely unique to you. Let’s make your old treasures sparkle again!
